Why we have our eyes open when idle? Why we embrace the irritating light when there is no immediate need?

A reflected light is everything for us — knowledge, colors and warmth. We are afraid of being left in the dark, afraid of a natural state of the universe. Our eyes are resting only when closed and yet we choose not to rest.

In an absolutely dark room why do we still keep them wide open?
